The lawyer of the man provisionally released from prison on grounds that he may have been wrongly jailed today filed an application in the Court of Criminal Appeal requesting the reopening of proceedings.

Lawyer Tonio Azzopardi requested the case to be reopened for new evidence which would prove his client was not guilty.

48-year-old dad Emanuel Camilleri had been condemned to two years imprisonment, confirmed on appeal, for allegedly sexually abusing his daughter. He was released by order of the Constitutional Court after spending 400 days in jail when it was shown that his daughter was told by her mother to give false evidence.

The mother is facing perjury proceedings.

The man has always maintained his innocence and kept up the fight to clear his name.
