Two Enemalta workers were seriously injured this evening in an explosion at an electricity sub-station in St Margaret Street, close to Dingli Street in Sliema.

The incident happened at about 6.50 p.m. A fire broke out at the back of the sub-station. Residents of overlying apartments were evacuated.

The men, a 54-year-old from Naxxar and a 48-year-old from Mosta, were rushed to hospital in two ambulances after suffering burns. The police said the Naxxar man's condition is critical.

The area had been without electricity since early in the afternoon.

Enemalta said the accident happened as the employees completed planned maintenance and were in the process of switching on the substation. Investigations are underway to identify what caused the fault.

A magisterial inquiry was held.
