The Coast Road will have two lanes in each direction under new plans submitted by Transport Malta.

Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said the authority was aware that this was the worse 'road killer' in the country and wanted to address its structural defects.

Mepa had approved two applications for works - PA 3883/08 and PA 3758/09 but because of reserved matters new plans had to be drawn up.

The road will have crash barriers to separate the carriageways in order to reduce dangerous overtaking. There will also be other safety features including traffic lights and a better quality road surface. There will also be bicycle lanes.

Works will be taken in hand at the end of this year.
