The latest report on the heated debate concerning the so-called "sexual health", together with the online comments that ensued, made for some very depressing reading.
At this juncture the question as to whether or not a condom vending machine should be installed on campus takes almost second place. The problem lies much deeper than that.
When the installation of a condom vending machine becomes the burning issue that requires the urgent attention of the future intelligentsia of Maltese society; when the University campus is transformed into an amphitheatre whose spectators are called upon to decide thumbs-up (condoms yes), thumbs-down (condoms no); when a piece of elastic rubber is portrayed as a monument to human liberation from the alleged strictures of Catholic teaching; when the only attractive offer that a mobile phone company can give to first-time University students on their first day on campus is a condom; then one can only conclude that our Alma Mater is in a sad state indeed and that the future of Maltese society is even sadder.
