ussia's anti-terrorism committee today showed  a video of a special operation in the Caucasus republic of Dagestan, saying that one militant was killed.

The Committee handout video showed servicemen shooting a house in the mountainous village and blowing it up with a rocket launcher.

National Anti-Terrorist Committee spokesman, Aleksander Poliakov, said the militant had been blockaded in the house since yesterday.

"Security services received information about an armed person present in of the houses in the village of Andi in the Botlikh region of Dagestan, who was involved in committing terrorist attacks.

"Special services of the Russian interior ministry blockaded the private house where the bandit was hiding and the surrounding territory was closed off.

"In order to avoid terrorist attacks and secure the safety of civilians the head of the anti-terrorism committee operational staff in the Republic of Dagestan enforced the regime of an anti-terrorist operation," he said.

The statement by the committee said no servicemen or civilians were injured during the operation.

"In response to the lawful demands by the security forces to give up his arms and give in, the bandit started firing with an automatic weapon. The active phase of the anti-terrorist operation was started at night and completed today in the morning.

"The bandit was neutralised. According to the staff of the anti-terrorist committee in the republic he was a member of a gang that committed terrorist attacks on the territory of Chechnya and Dagestan.

"Automatic weapons and ammunition were found at the site of the engagement. There are no casualties in the ranks of special service nor among the civilian population," Aleksander Poliakov said.

The body of the militant was found on site while the rubble was being cleared.

Dagestan, as well as Chechnya, are part of the North Caucasus, a mountainous strip of southern Russia populated mainly by Muslim ethnic minorities where an Islamist insurgency is still simmering years after two separatist wars.
