In the only match from the top flight last weekend, SK Victoria Wanderers beat St Lawrence Spurs 3-1 to join three other teams at the top of the table on four points.

So balanced are the teams this season that, after two rounds of matches, none of the seven sides in the top flight have maximum points.

Victory for the Wanderers was not as easy as the final score might indicate. They took an early lead through Ajibade Adesina after just eight minutes but the Spurs hit back strongly and Wanderers keeper Franklin Vella came to his side’s rescue with a string of fine saves.

Jonathan Micallef went close for the newcomers but on 26 minutes Argentine Franco Franchin’s angled shot had the better of Vella.

The Spurs were playing on a par with the Wanderers until the 43rd minute when Lauran Pisani tripped Adesina in the box and David Udo Monday made it 2-1 from the spot.

St Lawrence never gave up even when they were reduced to 10 players on 49 minutes after Franklin Grima was dismissed by referee Anton Zammit for a second bookable offence.

A Charles Mercieca effort ended just wide and a Micallef header came off the crossbar. However, the Wanderers took the fight out of the Spurs when Adesina scored his second goal of the day.

The Spurs ran out of ideas and the Wanderers could have increased their margin but Ige Adesina’s shot was weak and Ajibade Adesina was denied a hat-trick by the woodwork.

Division Two

Oratory Youths came from behind in their match against Żebbuġ Rovers to turn defeat into victory with two late goals.

Rovers opened a two-goal lead in the opening stages of the match thanks to a Joseph Cordina penalty and a goal by Manwel Cordina two minutes later. Oratory re-opened the issue eight minutes from half-time from another penalty, this time taken by Francesco Cini.

Rovers wasted some clear chances to re-establish their two-goal lead with Cordina also missing a penalty on 67 minutes.

They paid dearly for these mistakes as the Youths stepped up a gear and went on to win the match 3-2 following goals by George Louis Zammit and Francesco Cini.

In another Division Two match, Xagħra United trounced Għarb Rangers 6-1.

Shaun Muscat (20, 58), Daniel Bartolo (38, 81) and Michael Bezzina (34, 90) were on target for the winners with Victor John Saliba (87) scoring a consolation goal for the Rangers.
