Vittoriosa Stars 1
Melita 0
(after extra-time)

Gary Inguanez scored in extra-time last night to secure his team’s place in the first round of the FA Trophy as Vittoriosa Stars struggled hard to edge Melita at the Centenary Stadium.

The Stars, now paired to play Dingli on Sunday, paraded newcomers Henry Makinwa and Leontin Chitescu but were unable to impose their play as Melita started lively and could have taken an early lead through Julian Galea.

The Amateurs held the initiative but with the introduction of Clayton Micallef the Stars started to play better and Makinwa saw his 57th-minute effort cleared off the line.

Keeper Henry Bonello was in fine form for Vittoriosa, stopping a George Gribbon header and a Galea chip on 80 minutes.

The match dragged into extra-time and Inguanez immediately broke the deadlock with a match-winning volley after receiving from Makinwa.
