Vandals struck at a street stone statue of St Dominic at Main Gate Street, Vittoriosa defacing it with red paint in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The larger-than-life statue is in a niche forming part of the bastions at one of the entrances to the maritime city.

The feast of St Dominic will be celebrated in Vittoriosa on Sunday.

The act brought the condemnation of many, including the local council.

An irate mayor, John Boxall said he felt this bad turn tarnished the good reputation of Vittoriosa.

He would be first to assist the police in their investigations if there is any indication as to who carried out such a cowardly act, he said.

The Prince of Wales Own Band Club and the St Dominic External Festivities Committee expressed disgust at this horrendous practice.

"This act goes against our religious beliefs and the institution of the Church in Malta and should be condemned by all," they said.

The two organisations expect the ecclesiastical and civil authorities to help to bring to book the person or persons who committed this repulsive act which is reminiscent of the dark ages, and spoils the image of the people of Vittoriosa and Catholics in general.

A report was filed with the police who are investigating.
