When Stagecoach first opened its doors in Malta in October 1998, the idea of sending children to drama school was unheard of. Before that there wasn't another private drama school in the land. Now one quick look through the newspapers will reveal that children are spoiled for choice.

Stagecoach was Malta's first performing arts school for children offering training in acting, singing and dance.

Edward Mercieca, senior principal, said: "I think it's wonderful that so many children are going to performance arts schools today, it's a sign that parents are considering the performing arts an important and integral part of their child's education and formation. We are very proud of being the initiators!"

However, he says it is not only about performing: "Stagecoach is about teaching children life skills that are essential. At Stagecoach they become more self-confident, they develop their personality.

Children mix with children from other schools, they learn to hold their own in a group, they overcome shyness. All these result in a better performing child, performing in life that is. They start to believe in themselves more and very often their school work improves. It's a win win situation."

Stagecoach offers part-time education in acting, singing and dancing to children from four years right up to adults. The school has a centre close to most areas around Malta: in Mosta, Birkirkara, St Andrews, Birżebbuġa, Mselliet, Gżira and Gozo.

Twice a year students perform for family and friends. Performances are based on musical theatre.

Every two years Stagecoach puts up an auditioned show for the paying public. Past shows include The Wiz, Bugsy Malone, Honk! and Oliver! The school is currently working on performances to be staged at St James Cavallier on September 9.

Recently an addition to the Stagecoach calendar has been the Stagecoach Vocal Aid, which is a song and dance show that raises money for children's charities. To date Vocal Aid has raised about €25,000 for children in need.
