Valletta Futsal president Baldassare Borg has been slapped with a fine and ordered not to attend futsal matches after taking part in a rowdy punch-up between players of the Valletta and Hamrun teams.
Last Friday's Valletta-Hamrun match descended into a brawl between players upon the final whistle after Brazilian player Raphael Felipe Ortiz de Oliviera allegedly elbowed Valletta's goalkeeper during the match.
Mr Borg was charged with slightly injuring the Brazilian player, assaulting him, joining an affray, breaching public peace, behaving abusively by leaping over the barrier without authorisation and disobeying police orders.
Mr Borg informed the court that he will be resigning from his post as the club's president after finally realising that the sport seemed to activate in him a switch which overruled his usually calm demeanour. The accused also had a similar past conviction.
Before Magistrate Francesco Depasquale, Mr Borg admitted to the charges brought before him and was ordered to pay a €500 fine.
Other people are expected to be arraigned in the coming days.
Police inspectors Spiridione Zammit and Chantelle Casha prosecuted. Lawyer Roberto Montalto defended the accused.
The futsal league ends this Thursday with a final decider between Hamrun and Valletta.
