A sixth former was yesterday put on probation for a year after slightly injuring a policeman during a Valentine’s party in the early hours of Monday morning.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named because he is a minor, got into an argument with the police while they were talking to a member of his group after they made a lot of noise at around 2 a.m. The party was being held in St Paul’s Bay and had spilled out into the street when the police turned up to calm down the rowdy group.

The court heard that the young man had had a lot to drink before trying to defend his friend against being arrested.

The teenager pleaded guilty to slightly injuring an officer, violently resisting arrest, breaching the peace and swearing in public while drunk.

In handing down judgment, Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona told him that such things were simply not done and could not be allowed. Lawyer Robert Abela appeared for the accused.
