US Ambassador Douglas Kmiec has donated teaching material to the General Workers' Union and the Migrant Solidarity Movement in aid of the union's migrant integration programme.

Prof. Kmiec presented flipcharts, whiteboard markers and teaching aids which will be used during English language classes offered to African migrants in Malta. They will supplement several thousand English language books that the Embassy recently helped the union to obtain.

It is hoped English language training will facilitate future employment and integration into the western world, wherever the migrants eventually settle.

Prof. Kmiec commended the initiative to help educate migrants and referred to Pope Benedict XVI's speech before leaving Malta last Sunday.

"The Holy Father exhorted all countries to come together to assist the migrants and protect the human rights and dignity of our neighbours," he said.

He added that the US had demonstrated its commitment to helping Malta with its burden and commended the GWU and other organisations for promoting integration of migrants in society.
