Two hunters were early this morning spotted and filmed by Committee Against Bird Slaughter (Cabs) stalking protected stone curlews between Salina and Maghtab.

In a statement this morning, Cabs said birdwatchers immediately alerted the police who responded quickly and apprehended the men. The incident happened at 5.40am.

The police, however, said when contacted they only apprehended one person, a 49-year-old man from Naxxar.

They were caught in the same area where two protected white storks were killed on March 23.

CABS said one of the two men arrested today was a repeat offender. According to the new amendments to the Conservation of Wild Birds Regulations, he can be sentenced to two years in jail or to pay a fine up to €10,000.

If found guilty both will lose their hunting licence.
