Recently I learned that Antonio Flores will be representing Malta in the Paralympics. As a former teacher (physical education) of Antonio I can vouch for his efforts and dedication. He was an exemplary student who inspired his friends, many of whom were not even aware that he had a serious disability. In spite of this Antonio always managed to be selected on his own merits on the school athletics team. At club level, he was also selected on the "normal" team in sprinting events.

One other achievement of Antonio was to pass the SEC O level PE exam after sitting for it as a private student and studying on his own. Well done, Antonio. It is an honour to say that I have been one of your teachers.

Having said that, I'm sure that there are other athletes like Antonio who deserve to represent Malta at the Paralympics. These athletes have brought us more honours (in terms of medals) at this level than the able-bodied athletes. So how come our representation is so poor. Is it just lack of funds? From the psychological perspective, Antonio is already at a disadvantage because he will be alone in a big country with a big task. In his comments he expressed his wish to be in the company of other athletes. I hope that some top official will take up the task of visiting him to "boost his morale".
