The UK will contribute defence assets to support Malta’s security operation for the EU's Valletta Summit on Migration and for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2015, the Foreign Ministry said today.

The assistance will be provided after a request by the Maltese government.

"There are no known specific threats for these events and these measures are precautionary," the ministry said.

"The UK’s support to the Maltese security operation demonstrates the close and constructive relationship between Malta and the UK, as a result of our enduring ties and shared interests as members of the EU and the Commonwealth.”

"The Government of Malta welcomes the contribution by the British Government during these two important events."

The Valletta summit in the middle of next month will group EU leaders and African leaders from countries viewed as departure points for migrants.

CHOGM, which follows a couple of weeks later, will be opened by Queen Elizabeth and will group the heads of government of Commonwealth countries.
