Members of the Civil Protection Department battled a fire for over two hours as it ripped through two vans and a large number of bales of hay worth thousands of euros.

The vehicles were both destroyed in the blaze, which occurred in Mosta Road, Burmarrad on Tuesday night. Sources close to the CPD said they believe the fire started in hay that was stacked on one of the vans.

The fire spread quickly to a nearby field where bales of hay used as animal feed were packed and stacked ready to be delivered to buyers. Another van, a Peugeot which was parked nearby, also caught fire.

No one was injured but the two vans are beyond repair.

CPD personnel from the Xemxija and Kordin stations, led by station manager Natalino Bezzina, saved a truck from catching fire by moving it away.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera appointed a team of court experts to help her in an inquiry.
