IRISL's new 6,500 TEU vessel, Fifth Ocean, called at the Freeport yesterday on its maiden call as part of the new AMX service.

The service will be operated as a joint venture between IRISL and China Shipping Container Lines. This joint Asia-Mediterranean service will be supplied through eight ships sailing on a weekly basis.

The service ranks among the top 10 services in this trade, in terms of capacity, and predominantly covers central and western Mediterranean, the Freeport said.

This new service marks an increased presence for IRISL at the Freeport, which now has three mainline services a week calling regularly.

IRISL started using Freeport as its transhipment hub for Mediterranean services in 2004. It will deploy four brand new vessels on this service with a nominal capacity of 6,500TEUs, whilst China Shipping will deploy four vessels with a capacity of 5,500TEUs. The AMX service will operate to Malta weekly on the following port rotation: Malta Freeport - Valencia - Barcelona - Genoa - Damietta - Tianjin - Dalian - Pusan - Shanghai - Ningbo - Shekou - Port Kelang and back to Malta Freeport.

As a result of the various shipping lines which have chosen the Freeport as their Mediterranean transshipment hub - namely CMA CGM Group, IRISL, UASC, Maruba Lines, Evergreen, Delmas, Hamburg Sud and Deutsche-Afrika Linien - clients presently enjoy network connections with 125 ports worldwide, 60 of which are in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
