The Public Transport Federation this afternoon reminded the government that it had called for an urgent meeting with the minister for transport on July 4 to discuss the granting of further permits to hearse owners, only to be ignored.

The government subsequently continued with its plans without consultation, the federation complained, even though it had previously agreed with the Malta Hearses Association not to grant other permits on condition that all hearses were upgraded to more recent vehicles.

The federation insisted that it is not threatening the government but observing the rights of its members.

"No reference to liberalisation was made in the government's electoral programme and it is astonishing how the government is using the consumer rights excuse to continue with its strategy," said the federation.

The federation said that it is ready to call off any industrial action should the government refrain from issuing further permits before discussing the effects of its strategy with each sectors.
