A staggering 18,000 tons of silt and illegally-dumped waste were removed during rehabilitation works in Ta’ Żejta Valley, in the limits of Victoria.

The works, which started a few months ago, cleared the valley floor and two rainwater reservoirs.

Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono, who visited the valley last week, said similar works were expected to start this week in Marsalforn Valley.

The aim of the project was to allow the sister island to retain more rainwater rather than letting it go to waste. This would benefit farmers because they would have to depend less on groundwater extraction, she noted.
