Joe Cassar, MOC general secretary, writes:

Reference is made to the article (Men's Team Deserves More Credit, Omitted Duo Say) published in The Times (Saturday, May 23).

The Maltese Olympic Committee would like to state that the two swimmers interviewed achieved the following times against the set minimum qualifying standards set by the MOC.

MQS set by MOC (1,500m): 16.40.93. Time achieved by Neil Agius: 17.05.62.

MQS set by MOC (100m breaststroke): 1:05.28. Time achieved by Andrea Agius: 1.09.22.

The gap in these times speak for themselves.

Although the MOC appreciates the efforts made by all the athletes, it can only include in its contingent those with a chance of competing for a medal and not mere participation in the Games of the Small States of Europe.
