The government has been sacrificing the finances of Enemalta for the last 10 years for political gain.
The public has been told over and over again that Enemalta is absorbing part of the electricity bills, when in reality it was merely taking loans which would eventually have to be paid back by the consumers.
It was not political courage by the government that caused the about-turn: It was the obligation imposed by the European Investment Bank when making the loan that Enemalta should have a business plan. The wonder is that economists like Vince Farrugia were taken completely by surprise when it was so obvious that the situation was unsustainable.
The messages have been ample.
Not least the resignation of three well-paid CEOs in under three years.
There is only one solution after the present crisis has subsided: Enemalta should be taken away from the hands of politicians and start operating as a business.
