Justice and the courts have once again failed to mete out proper punishment to child rapists and demonstrated the fact that they cannot provide protection to our children.

The article Jailed For Raping A 10-Year-Old Girl (October 9) states that "the court ruled that the prosecution had proven well beyond reasonable doubt that the accused was guilty of the crime he was charged with".

Since there was no shadow of a doubt which would have favoured the rapist with a lenient sentence, how come he was actually only given seven years, when the maximum should have been 10 years?

He repeatedly raped the child for years making her life hell and destroying her future.

When are the laws protecting our children going to be revised and harsher sentences and penalties introduced?

Can the Attorney General please advise if it is within his competence to appeal from the above sentence?

Is the child a Ward of Court or any approved agency?

Is there a lawyer out there who, pro bono, will take up the case of the child and sue the rapist for every penny he has?

In cases where a parent has failed in his/her legal obligations towards their children, are the police legally obliged to takes steps against them?
