The Maltese woman who categorically denied any involvement with a body found dumped in a wheelie bin in Surrey was interviewed by the British police in connection with the case.

Lilia Fenech, 23, was held on landing at Gatwick Airport on June 17 over the murder of her German husband's ex-wife, Melanie, whose badly decomposed body was found in the bin outside their former residence.

She was interrogated and released on bail against travel restrictions until the end of June.

Earlier this month, her husband Peter Wallner was charged with murder and preventing the lawful burial of his former wife.

Mr Wallner, 33, who voluntarily flew to the UK from Malta when he learnt the Surrey police were looking for him, was arrested the minute he reached Gatwick Airport on June 11 after the body was identified as that of his missing wife. She was identified through dental records.

He was remanded in custody and will appear before the Central Criminal Court, the Old Bailey, in London, for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday.

After her body was found outside their former residence in Hamilton Avenue, the British police launched a manhunt for the couple. A post-mortem examination found the victim had suffered a serious head injury but the cause of death was not known.

The victim's family were under the impression she had died from natural causes in September 2006 and were shocked to find out her body was dumped in Surrey.

When the story broke, Ms Fenech's father, Martin, defen-ded his daughter and contested reports describing her as Mr Wallner's lover. He insisted his daughter was married to Mr Wallner and that his previous wife had died three years ago.

Attempts to contact Mr Fenech yesterday proved futile.

The couple had packed their belongings in a white rental Volkswagen van and drove across the English Channel to Malta. The Surrey police had appealed for information about the couple and their van, which was later tracked down in San Ġwann. The van was removed after the Surrey police made arrangements to have it returned to the UK.

Melanie Wallner would have been 32 on November 10 last year but it remains unclear when she died exactly. She was born in South Africa but lived for many years in the UK.
