An eight-week public consultation document on a strategic plan for the environment (SPED) and development was launched today by the planning authority.

The plan will eventually replace the 1992 Structure Plan and will regulate the sustainable use and management of sea resources in an integrated manner until 2020.

Details were announced by Parliamentary Secretary for Planning Michael Farrugia.

The plan which covers sea territory up to 25 nautical miles, addresses a number of issues including climate change, transportation and air quality, coastal zones and Gozo’s double insularity.

It also aims to reduce development densities of certain urban spaces, increase green open spaces as well as make minor adjustments to the 2006 development zone boundaries.

The plan also identifies a number of sites such as those in the vicinity of the airport for specific purpose which in this case is that of an aviation park. It also calls for a better link between Malta and Gozo.

Dr Farrugia said that this plan will then pave the way for the revised local plans.

The consultation document can be viewed on the MEPA website.
