Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt on Monday in Parliament gave a breakdown of the main contracts in connection with the €1.2 million rehabilitation of St George's Square in Valletta.

He was answering parliamentary questions by Labour MP Charles Buhagiar. The costs included €467,542 for natural stone paving; €2,223 for scarifying (breaking up the old surface); €53,057 for LED; €129,582 for pumps and water systems; €129,800 for bespoke lighting; €5,145 for trees and €42,012 for tubular arch lighting.

Planters cost €49,347; benches €65,202; dustbins €4,803; special timber €19,399; portabiciclette €1,563; a large banner €16,490 and hot asphalt €3,256. All this amounted to a subtotal of €989,421.

Materials used by government employees cost €117,434; the hiring of equipment €3,346; services €19,725; miscellaneous expenditure €20,029 and overtime €66,456, for another subtotal of €226,990.

The total cost was €1,216,411.
