MIA Division Two

ST GEORGE'S 1
XGHAJRA TORNADOES 0

This was the fifth success in the league for promotion seekers St George's as they defeated Xghajra Tornadoes, the latter having to play for half the match with ten players after having a player sent off just before the break.

The Saints, now joint leaders with Gzira United who, however, have a game in hand, dominated proceedings during the first half as Xghajra goalkeeper Carter had to be alert to save his team from suffering early goals. However, there was nothing he could do in the 14th minute when he was beaten by an Ivan Camilleri penalty.

In the 44th minute Xghajra had Anthony Muscat collecting a second booking and an early shower.

Six minutes into the second period the Saints had a Camilleri goal disallowed for offside with Xghajra, buoyed by Carter's solid performance, finding space to launch a quick counter-break but Darren Cassar missed his chance.

ZURRIEQ 0
ATTARD 1

A late goal, scored by Chris Ciappara, gave Attard three useful points as they moved away from the bottom half of the standings leaving Zurrieq in the relegation zone.

Play resulted mostly in midfield during the opening 45 minutes.

Attard twice went close through Chris Ciappara and Colin Ciantar but on 30 minutes Zurrieq were denied by Spiteri off a Matthew Genuis header.

Zurrieq carved out the better chances after the restart and looked the more likely of the two teams to open the score but seven minutes from time Ciappara got the goal that mattered after some fine play from Christian Micallef.

Referee: Andre Arciola.

ZEJTUN CORINTHIANS 0
DINGLI SWALLOWS 1

An Aldrin Muscat goal was enough for Dingli to notch their fourth consecutive victory and move closer to the teams challenging for promotion.

Dingli were denied by goalkeeper Mifsud early on but in the 21st minute they took the lead when Muscat was on the right spot to hit home from an Etienne Farrugia cross.

In a rare attack, Mario Farrugia almost drew Zejtun level as the match became more balanced with the minutes ticking away.

James Galea had his shot saved by Abela and a free-kick by Norbert Gerada just missed the target.

Three minutes from time Dingli were reduced to ten players when Robert Farrugia was sent off for a second yellow card.

Referee: Alan Mario Sant.

ZEBBUG RANGERS 0
VITTORIOSA STARS 1

A goal by substitute Josef Spiteri a minute from time saw Vittoriosa Stars handing Zebbug their second defeat of the season.

Vittoriosa assumed the initiative and after only six minutes a low Robert Adami shot was saved by Pace. Larry Lagana then hit wide from a good position with the Rangers failing to produce a reaction.

The second period saw Vittoriosa creating the first goal-scoring chances but Mark Ciantar and Robert Adami were off-target.

The match looked destined for a goalless draw until a minute from time when Spiteri scored an unexpected winner for Vittoriosa.

Referee: Paul Caruana.

MIA Division Three

Fgura United 0
Ghaxaq 1

A Chris Camilleri added-time goal saw Ghaxaq springing a surprise and jolting Fgura United's promotion aspirations.

The first period was a drab affair with goalmouth actions being quite rare. Fgura dictated matters mostly during the second half with Ghaxaq 'keeper Mula doing well to deny Elvin Gauci and Patrick Cilia.

Fgura pounded the Ghaxaq fort all the way but three minutes into stoppage time Elton Zammit was sent off for a professional foul. Robert Agius's free-kick was partially blocked but in nipped Camilleri to ram home the loose ball.

Referee: Juergen Spiteri.

Sta Venera Lightnings 5
Sirens 0

Sta Venera dominated this match as the scoreline clearly shows. The three points helped Sta Venera to move closer to the teams challenging for the top places.

After 12 minutes the Lightnings were already in front when Kevin Vella headed in from a corner. Andrew Hili then made it 2-0 and a Jeffrey Zammit free-kick was met by Dennis Bonello who made the score 3-0 with a first-timer.

Sta Venera maintained the initiative after the break and after twice hitting the post, through Piccinino and Vella, they added further goals through Bonello, again, and Zammit.

Referee: Esther Farrugia.

Pembroke Athleta 1
Luqa St Andrews 1

Leaders Pembroke Athleta just managed to salvage a point thanks to a 90th-minute goal scored by Andre Cachia who was later on sent off.

After just ten minutes Pembroke 'keeper Grima Baldacchino made a difficult save on Mark Said's low shot and on another occasion Luqa were unlucky when Jason Cutajar's effort hit the bar.

Pembroke had their chances but seven minutes after the restart a cross by Jason Cassar from the right flank fell Randolph Penza's way and the Luqa player made no mistake from close in.

Pembroke reacted and went close on various occasions. In the 90th minute Cachia scored the equaliser. However, he marred his day with a sending off in added time.

Referee: Malcolm Mercieca.

Ta' Xbiex 1
Gharghur 1

Gharghur looked heading to an unexpected defeat but a last-gasp Daniel Bonello goal earned them a point against an improved Ta' Xbiex side.

Gharghur surged forward early on in search of an early breakthrough, Kris Sargent was close to the target from a free-kick but Jeremy Dalli fluffed his chance in front of the Ta' Xbiex goal.

Gharghur did much of the attacking after the break but Ta' Xbiex held composure and forged ahead from a swift counter-break in the 73rd minute thanks to a Karl Azzopardi goal.

Gharghur were stunned but managed to save the match at the death when Bonello headed home from a Sargent free-kick in the 88th minute.

Referee: Mariano Debono.
