Buffon: Juventus and Italy may be without goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon for the next two months because of injury. Buffon suffered a shoulder problem after clashing with Milan's Kaka during the 2-1 Berlusconi Cup defeat on Sunday. He will miss the Italian Super Cup game against Inter on Saturday and has already been ruled out of tomorrow's friendly in Ireland. Juventus may now opt to move on the transfer market as they only have Antonio Chimenti as back-up.

Baptism of fire: Dundee United striker David Fernandez had a baptism of fire at his new club after being hit in the face by manager Gordon Chisholm's shoe during Sunday's 3-0 Scottish Premier League defeat by Hearts. The Spaniard, who joined United from Celtic on Friday, needed three stitches but made his debut as a second-half substitute following treatment in the dressing room. Chisholm, frustrated by some of the referee's decisions, lashed out at a water bottle, only for his shoe to hurtle off and strike Fernandez, cutting the left side of his chin.

Jenas - no red card: Newcastle's Jermaine Jenas has had his sending off against Arsenal on Sunday quashed, England's FA said yesterday. After reviewing a video of Jenas's 32nd minute tackle on Brazilian midfielder Gilberto which earned him an immediate dismissal, match referee Steve Bennett requested that the red card be downgraded to a yellow card, the FA said. The request was considered by an FA disciplinary commission which confirmed the downgrade from sending-off to caution.

Cavallero: Argentine goalkeeper Pablo Cavallero has set his sights on a return to the national squad for the World Cup finals in Germany next year. The 32-year-old, who plays with Levante in the Spanish second division, was first choice for Argentina at the World Cup finals in 2002 but dropped out of favour with national team coach Jose Pekerman in June last year. "While I am still playing I will always dream of turning out for Argentina," Cavallero said.

Tevez Argentine forward Carlos Tevez scored twice and set up the other three goals to inspire Brazilian championship leaders Corinthians to a 5-3 win over Ponte Preta in a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday. Signed for a South America record fee of $18 million last year, Tevez took his tally to nine goals after an inspired performance. Elsewhere, 39-year-old former Brazil forward Romario scored the winner in Vasco da Gama's 2-1 victory over Atletico Mineiro.
