Cole: Injured Arsenal left back Ashley Cole will be ready to play for England in the World Cup in June, according to his manager Arsene Wenger. "I don't think at the moment that the World Cup for Ashley is under threat," Wenger said. Cole damaged his ankle in a reserve game against Tottenham on Monday and is expected to be out for three to four weeks. The England international has managed little more than an hour of competitive football since October after fracturing his right foot and then struggling with a thigh injury.

Sherigham: Former England striker Teddy Sheringham is set to become the oldest outfield player in Premier League history after signing a one-year contract with West Ham United. Since joining West Ham on a free transfer in July 2004, Sheringham has scored 26 goals in 53 league and cup appearances. The 39-year-old played a major role in the Hammers' promotion from the second division last season.

Keane: Tottenham Hotspur's Irish striker Robbie Keane has signed a new four-year contract. "It is something that has been going on for a while, I am just happy it is now signed and I can look forward to a good future with Tottenham," said the new Ireland captain. It has been a good week for Keane, who celebrated becoming Ireland skipper with a goal in his country's 3-0 friendly win over World Cup-bound Sweden at Lansdowne Road on Wednesday.

Messi: Argentina forward Lionel Messi has been left out of Barcelona's squad to face Deportivo La Coruna at home in the Primera Liga today. "He is the youngest player in the team and we have to look after him. He is a vital player for us, but we have a strong enough squad to cover his absence," coach Frank Rijkaard said.

Ronaldo: Striker Ronaldo has been left out of Real Madrid's squad for the city derby against Atletico Madrid today. The Brazilian has been criticised by Real fans for below-par performances and hinted last week he wanted to leave. On Thursday, Real's new president Fernando Martin said he would not put up with players who failed to put in the required effort. Real coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro said the player had been left out for tactical reasons.

Lampard: Chelsea's Frank Lampard will miss today's Premier League game at West Bromwich Albion because of a hamstring injury and may struggle to be fit for Tuesday's Champions League showdown with Barcelona. The 27-year-old midfield stalwart, who has sat out only one other Premier League game this season, was sent home from England's training camp this week and missed the friendly against Uruguay after tweaking the hamstring in training.
