Bayern out: Holders Bayern Munich were knocked out of the German Cup after going down 4-2 to Alemannia Aachen last night. Aachen raced into a 3-0 lead in the first half of the third-round tie thanks to two goals from Romanian striker Laurentiu Reghecampf and one by Marius Ebbers. They then had to withstand a storming second-half fightback from Bayern, 13 times Cup winners including the last two seasons. It was a case of history repeating itself for Aachen, the last side to beat Bayern in a German Cup tie with a 2-1 triumph in the 2003-04 quarter-finals.

McLaren goes: Striker Andy McLaren left Dundee by mutual consent yesterday after receiving three red cards and a subsequent eight-match ban following their 2-1 weekend defeat in a second division match at Clyde. "He was just signed until the summer (as a player-coach) but he will be a big loss to the club."

Bury out of FA Cup: Former FA Cup winners Bury were expelled from the competition yesterday after fielding an ineligible player in their 3-1 win over Chester City in a second round replay last week. Chester have been reinstated in the world's oldest cup competition, subject to an appeal by Bury, and will play Ipswich Town in the third round next month. Bury won the FA Cup in 1900 when they beat Southampton 4-0 in the final and again in 1903 when they beat Derby County 6-0 - still the record winning score in any final since the competition began in 1871-72.
