Switzerland: Switzerland will be missing key players, captain Alexander Frei and midfielder Valon Behrami, for their World Cup opening match against Spain, Swiss coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said. Hitzfeld said that neither Frei nor Behrami had recovered from ankle and thigh injuries respectively to be fit enough for tomorrow's Group H match.

Mexes: Manchester City want to re-inforce their defensive lines with the signing of Frenchman Philippe Mexes, of Roma. Mexes, 28, has been increasingly on the sidelines at the Stadio Olimpico and could be ready to move on. Roma have labelled a €13 million price tag on Mexes.

TV Audience: China has recorded the single largest television audience for a World Cup match in the first two days of the tournament. "The highest confirmed in-home audience of the opening two days was achieved in China, where an average of nearly 24 million viewers watched the coverage of Greece vs Korea Republic," FIFA said.

Colantuono: Coach Stefano Colantuono has left Torino after their upset in the Serie B play-off final against Brescia. Torino missed out on promotion after a 2-1 defeat on Sunday. "I am going back to Atalanta," he said. "Atalanta are my family."

Horse Racing: Unbeaten Zenyatta won her 17th consecutive race on Sunday, giving the mighty mare the longest winning streak in unrestricted races by a modern-day US thoroughbred. The six-year-old won the 200,000-dollar Vanity Handicap by a half-length at Hollywood Park, displaying her trademark finishing speed as she rallied to overtake St Trinians just before the wire. Hong Kong champion Silent Witness won 17 straight sprint races, a streak capped in April of 2005, before the gelding was beaten the following month in his first attempt over a mile.

Golf: England's Lee Westwood won the St Jude Classic in a dramatic play-off, giving himself a boost days before the start of the US Open championship at Pebble Beach. Westwood became the first European to win the long-established tournament in Memphis when he beat Sweden's Robert Karlsson on the fourth hole of sudden-death. The Englishman claimed his second US PGA Tour victory, but his first since the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 1998.

Rugby Union: England have made various changes to the side that drew 28-28 with the Australian Barbarians in Perth last week for tomorrow's re-match in Gosford. Joe Worsley has replaced Chris Robshaw as captain and blindside flanker while wing David Strettle and centre Dominic Waldouck make their first starts of the tour. Props Jon Golding and Paul Doran-Jones also come into the team. James Haskell, who came off the bench in Saturday's 27-17 defeat to the Wallabies, takes over from Dan Ward-Smith in the back row.

Cricket: Asia's Test-playing nations begin preparations for next year's World Cup when they contest the region's top one-day prize from today. Away from the global spotlight on the football World Cup, the Asia Cup will be played in Sri Lanka over the next 10 days. India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, who co-host the cricket World Cup in February-April, will be joined by Pakistan in a round-robin with the top two contesting the final on June 24.
