Sebastian Vettel was left feeling down again on Sunday after a gearbox failure held him to fourth place at the Canadian Grand Prix.

The 22-year-old German was boosted to second place on the grid alongside eventual winner Lewis Hamilton, of McLaren, because his Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber had been penalised for changing his gearbox the morning of the race.

Vettel started well and led the race for a short time before being asked to hold back because of his gearbox and switch his focus from winning, to finishing.

Vettel said he was happy with the race strategy but lost out on a podium finish because a lapped car was holding him up.

"We had a gearbox issue and in the end had to save the car and bring it home," said Vettel.

"I think we did the right thing with tyres, everything worked and happened according to our plan, the others survived very little on soft tyres at the beginning so they had to stop early.

"They should have come out in traffic and their race is over, but it didn't happen. Half-way I had a lapped car which didn't want to move which lost me six seconds each time, and in the end I wasn't able to fight for the podium anymore."
