Serif: Serif Tiraspol won their 10th consecutive Moldovan league title beating 1-0 Academia Chisinau yesterday. Striker Alexandr Erokhin scored the only goal to give Serif, with 72 points, an unassailable 17-point lead over second-placed Iskra-Stal of Ribnita.

Omonia: Omonia Nicosia clinched their 20th Cypriot league title after beating fierce capital rivals APOEL in a narrow 1-0 play-off victory. Arguably the biggest club in Cypriot football and also known as the "people's team," Omonia pick up their first league trophy since 2003.

Rummenigge: Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said he will appeal to UEFA in person to try to overturn the ban which threatens to keep Franck Ribery out of the Champions League final. Rummenigge has said he will travel to UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, to speak at Wednesday's appeal hearing.

Stoke: Stoke have confirmed that adidas will become their new official kit supplier for the 2010-11 season after they signed a long-term deal with the company. Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes said: "This is a fantastic agreement for the club. The association with a global brand like adidas is a glowing indication of how far we have come."

Zagreb champs: Dinamo Zagreb were crowned Croatian champions for a fifth successive season and for the 12th time since 1991. The title was secured after a 0-0 draw with Hajduk Split. With just two games left, Dinamo have 61 points, seven ahead of second-placed Cibalia Vinkovci.

Athletics: Czech pole vaulter Katerina Badurova, a silver medal winner at the world championships in 2007, announced her retirement from the sport. The 27-year-old recently suffered damage to internal knee ligaments. A scan which revealed the full extent of her injury prompted her to make the decision.

Rugby Union: Cardiff Blues defeated hosts London Wasps 18-15 in the European Challenge Cup semi-final on Saturday to set up a final clash against Toulon. The Blues will face the big-spending French side at Marseille's Stade Velodrome on May 23 after holding their nerve to win a tense tie and reach their first European final since the inaugural European Cup in 1996.

Basket, NBA: LeBron James scored 12 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter as Cleveland Cavaliers beat Boston 101-93 in the opening game of their second-round play-off series. James, nagged by a strained right elbow and bone bruise, added seven assists and seven rebounds for the Cavaliers, who had the NBA's best regular-season record and own a home-court edge throughout the play-offs.

Motocross: Australia's former world motocross no.2 Andrew McFarlane, 33, died in a crash at the country's national championship yesterday, organisers said. McFarlane suffered severe head injuries in a practice lap crash and despite paramedics' efforts to revive him he died at the track at the State Motorcycle Sports Complex in Broadford, north of Melbourne. McFarlane was expected to retire from racing after the 2010 season.

Boxing: Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez will take on Juan Diaz, of the US, in a lightweight title re-match on July 31, Diaz hoping to turn the tables after Marquez stopped him in nine rounds last year. Marquez claimed the vacant WBA lightweight title with the victory on February 28, 2009.

Badminton: Swine flu has put Malaysia's national singles coach in hospital, prompting fears the virus could spread among players just a week before the world championships. The news threatens to throw the Malaysian team into disarray as it prepares for the Thomas and Uber cups - the men's and women's world team championships respectively. Malaysia, which won the men's title in 1992, is hosting the event from May 9 to 16.
