In my "Beck" column on Saturday, you will be able to read a few thoughts on the Engerer(s) saga, which is changing minute by minute, so don't be surprised if bits and bobs from here don't quite gell with the column.

Naturally, for a certain class of commentator, this story came like Manna from Heaven, yet another stick with which to beat Dr Gonzi around the ears. The Sunday papers are going to make such turgid reading, lucky I hardly bother with them any more.

The funny thing is, this story is turning round to bite Labour on its collective behind a bit like a rabid hyena which hasn't eaten for weeks and the behind having been smeared with whatever it is that makes hyenas salivate. If you follow certain "other blogs" you'll have got a taste of why Labour should be trying to squirm out of this one and not by squealing about silly phone calls, either, which seems to be the only tactic they know.

For instance, you'll see how a web-site that's run by Labour sympathisers (I won't give you the name, it's pure venom) only a few days ago was spewing rabid homophobia in Cyrus Engerer's direction. This site is not run by Labour, of course, but if anyone seriously thinks they wouldn't shut down if told to, then my middle name is Dumbledore. So much for Labour's inclusiveness and tolerance, some of them don't know the meaning of the words.

You'll also be able to appreciate how, if you take Labour's maidenly protestations at face value, you're going to have to believe that the Police Commissioner is stupid enough, and malleable enough, to be influenced by a single phone call, made in public and without even a scintilla of evidence of an attempt to influence him. Or that the Commissioner would dirty his hands simply to satisfy some vaguely defined desire for revenge in the context of investigations that started many months before there would have been any need for revenge.

Even if you believe that anyone within the PN is stupid enough to try.

And you'll also be able to marvel at how Labour are trying to beat Mr Galea Curmi (and through him the PM) over the head, albeit with a wet newspaper, because he is alleged to have tried to stop the investigations, while at the same time, the PN is supposed to have pushed the prosecutions to avenge themselves for Engerer's defection.

Make up whatever passes for your minds, why don't you, guys?
