Cartoon characters yesterday descended on Mater Dei Hospital's paediatric wards, bringing some cheer to the young patients there.

Spiderman, Hello Kitty, Dora the Explorer and her friend Diego surprised the children yesterday afternoon.

The cheerful costumes were worn by Volserv volunteers who wanted to bring some happiness to the children and help brighten their day in carnival time. The costumes, owned by SOS Malta, are usually used to raise funds.

The characters are expected to show up at hospital again on Tuesday and perhaps also after carnival.

Nicola Critien, from Volserv, explained that now that volunteers are also starting to work in hospital wards, it was planned that they would help entertain the children.
