Hamrun Spartans and Tarxien Rainbows picked their first point of the season when they cancelled each other in a 1-1 draw at the Hibs Stadium.

The match turned out to be a physical contest and there was little separating the two sides in the opening half.

It was Tarxien who broke the stalemate inside the first minute of the second half when Ricardo won possession and the Brazilian unleashed a powerful drive that flew past a helpless Omar Borg.

Hamrun fought back strongly and managed to draw level on 59 minutes when Luis Silva did well to meet Anderson Ribeiro's cross and head the ball home.

The Spartans should have won the match late on when Gaetan Spiteri missed two clear-cut chances. The Hamrun striker was first deny by an acrobatic save from Tarxien goalkeeper David Cassar and then he lobbed the ball wide with onlythe Rainbows custodian to beat.

Rupert Mangion was voted as the BOV Player of the Match.
