Spanish cyclist Isaac Galvez was killed in an indoor race at the weekend after a crash, organisers said yesterday.

The incident took place at around 0.30 a.m. yesterday during the Six Days of Ghent event. The final day's racing due yesterday evening was then cancelled.

Media said Galvez collided with Belgian competitor Dimitri De Fauw, struck a railing and lost consciousness. He died on the way to hospital.

Galvez was a track specialist and won a gold medal with partner Joan Llaneras in the "Madison" event in this year's World Championships in Bordeaux. They also won the title in 1999.

Galvez also competed in road race events and in July he finished second in the Tour de France fourth stage to Australian Robbie McEwen. But the Spaniard pulled out on stage 12 after failing to recover fully from injuries suffered in a couple of falls.
