A man was fined €1,400 after a sharp eyed soldier saw him throwing away a bag containing pills as his car approached a vehicle checkpoint.

The soldier saw Kenneth Camilleri throw a bag containing eight ecstasy pills out of the passenger window about two metres away from him during a checkpoint in March 2002.

Mr Camilleri was on his way to a party in Ħal Far .

The soldier told a court that said that he was placed 15 metres ahead of the checkpoint in case anyone threw anything out of a car he saw Mr Camilleri half out of the window throwing the bag away.

Mr Camilleri denied all the charges, admitting only to having smoked cannabis and taken ecstasy about a year previously.

Magistrate Lawrence Quintano said that he believed the soldier’s testimony. He found Mr Camilleri guilty of possessing the drugs and fined him €1,400.

Police Superintendent Neil Harrison prosecuted.
