A bowser full of smuggled high-sulphur diesel was found at Għajn Dwieli and seized by Customs yesterday after days of surveillance.

The bowser was discovered in a yard that was sealed so that access was only possible through a ladder. A pipe led from the bowser to an adjoining garage.

Customs officers quickly established that the diesel was contraband and it had a sulphur content that was 100 times higher than normal, which is harmful to health and the environment.

Customs conduct regular tests of fuel in various localities to ensure no contraband is used.

Incidentally, there were reports over the past days about poor quality diesel being sold from petrol stations. The Malta Resources Authority had said it was taking legal action against the petrol stations.

The police are investigating.
