A face-to-face discussion meeting with Malta's MEP candidates was organised in Gozo by the Europe Direct Information Centre.

Azzjoni Nazzjonali's Malcolm Seychell said that the illegal immigration was the main issue of his party and he called on Gozitans to act to prevent illegal migrants from touching Gozitans shores.

He said his party was against the Lisbon treaty and believed that Malta should not have accepted it because the country was losing its right to veto.

The EU was not a democratic institution because it did not empower its citizens but imposed laws on them.

Libertas Malta candidate Mary Gauci said that Libertas believed in transparency, democracy and accountability. These three fundamental elements of society were being eroded by Brussels through the Lisbon treaty which she said was disloyal to the people.

Ms Gauci said that when the EU demanded changes from the people, it should do likewise and change the way its institutions
operated. She described the EU as a growing monster, which lacked consultation with the people.

Libertas believed the EU ignored Malta on the illegal migration issue and it would work to rid Malta of this problem.

Allejanza Liberali candidate John Zammit said his party would work for human rights, workers rights, social issues, same sex
marriage and divorce.

He said that religion should not be part of the constitution and he wants a called for harmony in wages. He also called for a more democratic and free press.

Another discussion is being held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Mosta Civic Centre.
