Sliema Council has established that the damage caused to the monument of the three artists in Bisazza Street last week was accidental and not a result of vandalism.

CCTV footage showed a young girl being photographed on the monument moments before  the figure representing Victor Apap broke in two.

The monument is made of sand-filled ceramic glass and suffered other damage in the past. The head of Mr Apap's figure was smashed in June 2011.

The monument, which looks like bronze, features actors Ġemma Portelli, Charles Clews and Mr Apap sitting around a table with a fourth empty chair for people to be photographed on.

The broken remains of the monument were still on site this morning, four days after the latest incident, with a council spokesman saying the structure was being inspected by the artist and the makers - Mediterranean Ceramics.

The council is planning to issue a call for quotations to repair the monument in a way which would make it stronger, the spokesman said.
