Sliema Council said today that it has set up bollards at the bottom of St Anthony street, to close off the direct exit onto the Sliema Strand carriageway. It said the decision was solely intended to alleviate heavy traffic from the inner Tigne area.

Non-Tigne area bound traffic is thus being directed to use the Tigne' Tunnels to access The Strand, Sliema.

It said it would re-assess this measure following a trial period of one month, as agreed with Transport Malta.

REMOVAL OF PARKING BAYS

The council regretted the recent removal, by Transport Malta, of a number of parking bays along The Strand area in Sliema, saying this was contrary to the proposals it had made to increase parking bays in this highly frequented area.

The council said it was also concerned at the increasing amount of traffic congestion along The Strand, direction Gzira, due to the operation of traffic lights in this area.

"Regrettably, Transport Malta has declined our proposals to address this situation on a trial period late last year," it said.

TIMED PARKING SCHEME

The Council, meanwhile said it was looking forward to the publication by the Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure of the long awaited timed parking national policy which we hope would help alleviate the current dire parking situation.
