On Saturday, my wife and I attended a packed Sir Temi Zammit auditorium at the University in tal-Qroqq, where the Sliema Philarmonic gave its annual big band concert.

I would like to praise the organisation of this concert, which delivered a very good evening with a vast selection of music and songs. The band was made up of very good musicians under the capable hands of the young Maestro Sigmond Mifsud who is fast gaining an excellent reputation.

Pawlu of Fakawi sang songs from the Blues Brothers, Bob Marley, Beatles and Zucchero. He even made the audience stand up and dance.

Jessica Cachia sang The Winner Takes It All and the young Gozitan Francesca Borg performed Wind Beneath My Wings; both gave a very good interpretation. Tiziana Calleja of Singled Out sang Superstion and It's A Kind of Magic and she was very energetic on stage. Nevile Refalo, a good actor and singer, delivered a medley of Tom Jones songs and Caruso by Lucio Dalla. He deserved the long applause. Daniel gave us a couple of swing songs as a sample of what we are going to hear at a certain venue in March. Last but not least, the director himself played solo trumpet on Oh My Papa and was, as usual, great.

Well done Sliema Philharmonic; we await your next concert in April.
