SK Victoria Wanderers registered their second consecutive victory of the season after beating newly-promoted Xewkija Tigers 3-1.

In the other Division One match, Victoria Hotspurs lost to Għajnsielem 3-5.

The Wanderers had to fight hard to claim maximum spoils as Xewkija, who had keeper Jonathan Xuereb, Basil Chibueze and Chris Camilleri (formerly of Marsaxlokk) making their debut, saw more of the ball.

However, the Tigers were erratic in their finishing while the Wanderers were more clinical in front of goal. They opened the scoring on 20 minutes through a low shot by Ajibade Adesina.

Xewkija could have levelled six minutes later but Christian Bugeja saw his penalty, awarded for a foul on Chibueze, hitting the base of the post.

The Tigers continued to attack but the Wanderers kept their composure and managed to double their lead on 64 minutes through Manwel Cordina, following a fast break.

Xewkija suffered a setback seven minutes later when Josmar Vella was sent off for a second caution. Victoria put their minds at rest when Ige Adesina tripled their lead.

In stoppage time, Xewkija scored a consolation goal thanks to a header by Andreas Fotso.

The match between the Hotspurs and Għajnsielem was an exciting affair. Għajnsielem forged ahead after just two minutes through Errol Grima. However, the Citizens soon turned the result in their favour with goals from Daniel Farrugia and Uchenna Anywanna.

Thiago dos Santos made it two-all on 26 minutes and Għajnsielem regained the lead on 53 minutes through Joseph Attard.

The Hotspurs laid siege to their opponents’ goal and their efforts were rewarded 11 minutes from time with a goal scored by John Paul Grima.

However, Victoria’s celebrations were short-lived as Għajnsielem scored again seconds later courtesy of a Rodrigo Cariaga free-kick.

The Blacks were now in the driving seat and went on to seal the issue with a fifth goal by Kenneth Mercieca three minutes from time.

Division Two

St Lawrence Spurs inflicted a heavy 6-1 defeat on neighbours Għarb Rangers for their second win in as many matches.

Gothard Conti fired St Lawrence ahead but Għarb levelled soon after through an own goal by Daniel Micallef.

However, the Spurs were in full command and scored five more goals without reply through Christopher Cauchi, Renzo Formosa, Mario Cutajar and Conti (2).

Qala St Joseph, who started the 2009-10 campaign by clinching the Division Two KO, stayed on the winning trek with a 2-0 victory over Żebbuġ Rovers.

Mario Mifsud gave Qala the lead midway through the first half and despite having Christian Portelli sent off for dissent early in the second period, the Maroons went on to make sure of victory with a second goal scored by Peter Said.

In another Division Two match, Munxar Falcons beat Oratory Youths 2-0.

The match was keenly-contested but the Youths lost their plot after Kevin Grech was dismissed for dissent. The Falcons took immediate advantage to go ahead on 57 minutes through Mario Azzopardi.

William Cassar made it 2-0 eight minutes from time.
