The situation at Mcast was due to the government’s hard-headedness and was creating tension among students.

This was at a time when they were supposed to be studying a clear mind, Opposition leader Adrian Delia said on Thursday.

On January 25, a court suspended industrial action ordered by the teachers’ union.

Mcast insisted that court action taken by the college was a means to defend the students’ right for their education.

Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from the Malta Union of Teachers, Dr Delia said the Nationalist Party was concerned with what was happening at Mcast and the education sector.

The Opposition, he said, would continue to support MUT because it was teachers who gave young people direction.

MUT President Marco Bonnici said the government had stopped educators and teachers from exercising their right to strike. This, he said, was an attack on the union in an attempt to silence it.

The government, he said, expected the union to continue with talks while there was a warrant of prohibitory injunction in court. But the MUT could not negotiate while this was in place.

He noted that the government did not want to negotiate with the union when it had given notice of industrial action.
