A brother and sister from Żejtun were yesterday granted bail against a personal guarantee of €3,000 (Lm1, 287.55) after they pleaded not guilty to causing serious injuries during a fight.

Alistair Bianco, 28, alone pleaded not guilty to seriously injuring Stephen Portelli while his sister Chantelle, 25, pleaded not guilty to seriously injuring both her brother and Mr Portelli's father Carmelo, and driving dangerously.

Magistrate Antonio Vella heard how a fight had broken out between Mr Bianco and Stephen Portelli because the latter had allegedly been abusing Mr Bianco's sister. Ms Bianco in the heat of the moment tried to break up the fight by driving her car onto the two men.

Police Inspectors Arthur Mercieca prosecuted.

Lawyers Roberto Montalto and Michela Spiteri appeared for the accused.
