I have been reading about the entry of low-cost airlines to Malta for the past few years. Finally we are starting to see progress, with the introduction of Ryanair (Luton, Dublin and Pisa), Meridiana (Bologna), Centralwings (Warsaw), Clickair (Barcelona) and Germanwings (Cologne and Stuttgart).

But there are so many more opportunities (destinations) that are being missed. Take, for example, Tunisia as a destination - their national airline fills the niche destinations out of Monastir, which if Tunisair didn't fly, no other airline would.

For one, Germany is underserved. Instead of Air Malta focusing so much on Munich and Frankfurt, which have links to every holiday destination in Europe, why doesn't it fly to airports which have a limited choice of destinations such as Erfurt, Dresden, Leipzig, Friedrichshafen, Hannover, Dortmund, Nuernberg, Saarbrucken, Paderborn, Muenster, etc?

The same goes for Holland: Rotterdam, Groningen, Maastricht, Enschede, Eindhoven. The list is endless.

Holidaymakers who live next to regional airports would most likely limit themselves to the destinations served from their regional airport (normally Spain, Greece or Turkey).

So why doesn't Air Malta look into this and help increase the number of tourists, and in turn reduce competition with other Mediterranean destinations.
