Sannat Lions 1
Kercem Ajax 0

\n

The Lions have finally broken their duck! Sannat obtained their first win of the championship at the expense of Kercem Ajax to add to the uncertainty at the wrong end of the table where four teams are deeply embroiled in relegation trouble.

The Lions deserved their points as they were the better team, applying unrelenting pressure on Kercem who are finding the going tough in the top flight.

Kercem enjoyed the better start, though. In the early stages, Sannat goalkeeper Galea had to make two difficult saves from attempts by Draganov and Belhaj. However, Kercem's supremacy did not last long as most of the ensuing action took place in midfield.

Sannat were a transformed side after the break. Mutalib spurned two clear chances to break the deadlock while man-of-the-match Cristiano de Oliveira had a superb free-kick finishing just over.

De Oliveira was not to be denied though. Right on the hour mark, he scored the goal that mattered with a fine header from a John Vella free-kick.

Kercem's reaction lacked punch and Sannat were rarely in danger of forfeiting the points. Kercem's best opportunity to save the match came in stoppage time when an inswinging Elton Vella free-kick was saved by Galea with the aid of the bar.

Referee: Mariano Debono.

Division Two

Xaghra maintain perfect record

The last match from the first programme of the second round was an encounter between unbeaten leaders Xaghra United and Gharb Rangers, who are still without a point.

As expected, Xaghra met no difficulties in seeing off their struggling opponents to maintain their perfect record. The 5-0 scoreline matured with two goals in the first half by Joseph Portelli (15, 26), and three goals in the second period by Daniel Attard (48), John Camilleri (78) and Simon Sultana (90). Gharb's young goalkeeper Vella saved a penalty by Attard in the 22nd minute.
