The Union Ħaddiema Magħqudin took the authorities to task over the accidents in industry, in particular the building industry. But why stop there? From the OHSA's Accidents At Work Report 2006 and 2007, the number of accidents was: 2006 - 4,340 (696); 2007 - 4,215 (656). The numbers in brackets are accidents in construction (16 per cent) and the fatalities were six and seven respectively. Accidents averaged 17 per day!

I imagine this is a sensitive subject, because it is about work ethics, responsibility and consequences of non-compliance with existing regulations. But the fact is that accidents are a constant occurrence, some of them fatal. Yet it is very rare, if ever, that those responsible for an incident are brought to book. And this is happening either because the regulations are not being enforced or due to an absence of regulations. As if an injury or loss of life is something that goes with the territory! It is to no avail to appoint an organisation with responsibility unless it has the manpower and is authorised to enforce the regulations. In my opinion the OHSA does not have all the requisites to fulfil its role.

The media have the capability and the responsibility to keep the public informed about topics of national interest. In so doing the issue will be viewed in real terms. And hopefully it will prompt all those concerned to revise their respective responsibility.

I suggest that a chat show or a call-in show is hosted on this issue. Obviously the viewers will expect a candid and reasonable debate which endeavours to propose solutions where none exist, or suggestions to amend the existing regulations.

Topics might range from safety awareness to employees' and employers' responsibilities and obligations and the unions' role; and subjects from noise, lighting and illumination to working at height, safe handling of tools and chemicals, and safety wear. The participants should be the stakeholders in the employment and safety sector including the unions.
