A Romanian man was charged in court today with having slightly injured his neighbour and assaulting police who intervened in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras heard how 45-year-old Florinel Nitu, who lives in Bugibba, admitted to slightly injuring his neighbour Stoika Myleva and breaching the peace at about 1am. He, however, pleaded not guilty to assaulting police.

Lawyer Simon Micallef Stafrace made a request for bail but the prosecution objected because, in the past, the accused "had been wanted for a year".

Police Inspectors Joseph Busuttil and Nicholas Vella said police had had difficulties tracking him down to summon him to appear in court for a traffic sitting.

The magistrate granted him bail on condition that he continues to live in his Bugibba apartment. If he moves, he has to inform police within 12 hours.

He also has to sign daily at the Qawra police station. He was bound by a €500 deposit and a personal guarantee of €5,500.
