Chievo 0 Roma 2

Roma won at Chievo but their title dreams disappeared as Inter edged Siena this afternoon to win the scudetto on the final day of the season.

Mirko Vucinic put Roma ahead in the 39th minute after Francesco Totti had earlier hit the post.

Daniele De Rossi doubled Roma's lead on the stroke of half-time and the Giallorossi held on without major scares.

Claudio Ranieri's Roma looked as if they might pip Inter to the Scudetto as, for part of the game while they were leading, the Nerazzurri were being held to a goalless draw at Siena.

But Diego Milito earned Inter victory in the second half, meaning the result in Verona had no bearing on the top of the table.

Roma finish two points adrift of Inter, with Chievo in 16th place in the final standings.

Roma had plenty of support at the Bentegodi stadium, with 20,000 fans having travelled to Verona for the final game of the campaign.

Marco Cassetti had the first chance of the match for Roma after 13 minutes but the defender failed to test Chievo goalkeeper Lorenzo Squizzi with a shot on the turn from just outside the area.

Totti clame close for the visitors midway through the first half, with his right-footed strike from 12 yards beating Squizzi but hitting the far post.

Roma continued to surge forward and Totti twice had the chance to put his team in front but Squizzi was equal to the task on both occasions.

On the half-hour mark, Vucinic forced Squizzi to dive to his right to clear his fiercely struck shot from 20 yards.

Roma's efforts were finally rewarded in the 39th minute.

De Rossi fed Vucinic inside the box and his right-footed shot into the top right corner beat Squizzi.

Chievo had little time to react as Roma made it 2-0 before half-time.

David Pizarro found De Rossi who fired home superbly from 30 yards to stun Squizzi.

Chievo, who had failed to test Roma goalkeeper Julio Sergio in the opening half, showed more determination after the restart.

In the 50th minute, Luca Ariati's left-footed strike forced the keeper to turn the ball behind at full stretch and concede a corner.

With news that Inter had taken the lead at Siena, Roma looked jittery and Chievo almost punished them.

On the hour mark, Julio Sergio did well to parry away Sergio Pellisier's close-range effort.

At the other end, Squizzi made a great save from Vucinic's right-footed strike from the heart of the area when Roma's third of the afternoon looked inevitable.

With 15 minutes remaining, substitute Erjon Bogdani latched onto Luciano's cross and his header went wide, much to the disappointment of the Chievo supporters.

With seconds remaining, Marcos De Paula fired high and wide from the edge of the area in what was the last chance of the game.

After the final whistle, Roma players looked exhausted but got an ovation from their fans as they left the pitch.
